This is a decapod crustacean that lives in the depths of sand and sludge. It lives at depths of between 500 and 2000 metres. It belongs to the Palaemonidae family. It is a good swimmer and its migration distances are considerable. Its diet is based on organic remains, plankton and algae.
It has a strong, almost aggressive flavour, compared with other similar species such as prawns and king prawns. Its head is very tasty and is excellent to make sauces, soups and creams. Sometimes it is confused with the giant red shrimp whose quality is similar.
